Earn an Experiential Certificate in: Leadership in Business
Description
Leading an organization requires skills and traits such as being self-aware, having integrity, and communicating clearly. This certificate will help students to explore the difference between leading and managing and start to complete training in areas important to leadership. Students will have the opportunity to engage with leaders in the business world and begin to build their network.
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this certificate, students will be able to:
- Identify personal, strategic, and entrepreneurial opportunities that exist within diverse and globally interconnected business environments.
- Describe and analyze political, economic, sociological, technological, legal and environment constraints and possibilities for specific organizations.
- Apply principles of effective leadership to plan for, prepare, and manage team dynamics.
Purpose Courses
Students will choose at least three academic courses through Albion College in consultation with their certificate advisor. Courses should introduce issues relevant to Leadership in Business. Examples include but are not limited to:

- EM 289: Strategic Management
- PSYC 346: Industrial & Organizational Psychology
- PSYC 267: Psychology of Personality
- PSYC 236: Social Psychology
- PHIL 302: Leadership Ethics
- PHIL 303: Business Ethics
- SOC 333: The Sociology of Sex & Gender
- SOC 345: Race & Ethnicity
- COMM 203: Small Group & Organizational Communication
- COMM 207:Communicating Gender
- COMM 303: Organizational Culture & Communication
Honors courses and special topics courses that match the purpose of the certificate also may be approved.
Professional Development
Professional development hours can be fulfilled through any relevant Albion College training including workshops and Innovation Badges offered through the School for Public Purpose and Professional Advancement and college programs. External certifications and professional training offered by third party providers may also be approved by SPP staff.
Students will design or select the appropriate number of professional development hours for their catalog year.

- Review of Leadership Theories
- Employee Engagement Workshop: Respect People
- Active Listening workshop

Experiential Learning
Students will design or select the appropriate number of experiential learning hours, including community engaged experiential learning hours, for their catalog year.
Examples of possible opportunities include:
- Registered Internship (150 – 300 hours)
- AC3 (Albion College & Community Collaborative)
- BUS 351/2: International Entrepreneurial Exchange
- Leadership role/experience in student organizations, athletics or student employment
- Leadership role/experience through community engagement
- Relevant experiences from study away programs & opportunities
- Gerstacker Student Advisory Council
