Earn an Experiential Certificate in: Emergency Medicine

Description

The Wilson Medical  Institute offers an Experiential Certificate in Emergency Medicine. The emergency medicine certificate provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to problem solve and think critically while assisting others in life threatening situations. Students earning this certificate can participate in an EMT certification program and instruct CPR courses on campus and in the Albion community. Students begin this program by participating in purpose workshops before starting formal content below.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this certificate, students will be able to:

  • Compare various roles of the emergency service team.
  • Categorize emergent situations from non-life threatening situations.
  • Practice emergency medicine skills.

Purpose Courses

Students will choose academic courses through Albion College in consultation with their certificate advisor. Courses should introduce issues relevant to Emergency Medicine. The following courses are recommendations. Other courses may be approved by the Director of the Wilson Institute for Medicine.

  • PH 175: Introduction to Public Health
  • ANTHRO 368: Medical Anthropology
  • COMM 208: Health Communications
  • RS 261: Death and Dying
  • KIN 203: First Aid

Professional Development

Professional development hours can be fulfilled through any relevant Albion College training including workshops and innovation badges offered through the School for Public Purpose and Professional Advancement and college programs. External certifications and professional training offered by third party providers may also be approved by SPP staff.  

  • Workshops, primarily offered through the Wilson Institute for Medicine and programs within SPP
  • Guest speakers 
  • Successful completion of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training program
  • Successful completion of CPR Instructor certification training program
  • Successful completion of Wilson Institute for Medicine badge: Interprofessional Healthcare Collaboration
  • Leadership roles through various entities of campus

Experiential Learning

Students will design or select the appropriate number of experiential learning hours, including community engaged experiential learning hours, for their catalog year.

  • Clinical job shadowing in Emergency Department 
  • Employment as EMT
  • Community engagement
    • Kids Cardiac Life Support
    • Healthy Babies Day
    • Health & Safety Expo 
    • Community Hearts CPR Program

This program promotes student and staff/faculty interaction through group discussions. Program objectives are evaluated through pre and post assessments and student reflections.
