Off-Campus Opportunities

Internships, Research, and Other Experiential Opportunities

Learning in our department extends far beyond the classroom. Through internships, research projects, and off-campus experiences, students engage directly with communities and contexts that deepen their understanding of identity, culture, and social change. These experiences may include working with racial or ethnic communities in the United States, studying or conducting research in ancestral or multi-ethnic communities abroad, or pursuing cross-cultural investigations that reveal how gender, sexuality, race, and ethnicity operate in different societies.

Students design their experiential learning in consultation with the program chair and are encouraged to explore a wide range of options aligned with their interests and goals. Upon returning to Albion, they reflect on their experiences by submitting a journal and evaluation that describe how the work has broadened their multicultural perspectives and enriched their understanding of power, privilege, and identity in a global context.

In addition to these hands-on learning opportunities, students can extend their engagement and impact by connecting with campus partners like the Anna Howard Shaw Center for Gender Equity, the James L. Curtis Institute for Social Change, and the Office of Belonging. These centers offer additional programs, mentorship, networks, and advocacy opportunities that help students translate classroom learning into meaningful action — and prepare them to lead change in their communities and professions.
