Fritz Shurmur Center for Teacher Development

Where active students learn to share their passion for knowledge.

At the Fritz Shurmur Center for Teacher Development, we believe that a liberal arts education creates a unique passion for learning by exploring how different disciplines are connected. Critical thinking and creative problem solving become second nature to the liberally educated student. They are also the hallmarks of an effective teacher.

Albion College has established the Shurmur Center with the belief that a liberal arts education is the best foundation for teacher preparation.

The Maemester Boundary Crossing experience allows Albion College education students a unique hands-on opportunity to live the day of a teacher.

During the spring term, junior-year students, all of whom have been admitted into the Fritz Shurmur Center for Teacher Development, teach their units over a three-week Maemester period.

Students plan experiential learning and gain experience creating a budget for materials. Students are able to apply theory, research, and pedagogical knowledge that they learned during their seminar to the real world.
