TPC Announcement

August 19, 2022

Dear Colleagues,

As we begin the fall semester, I write to share an update with you on The Philadelphia Center. July 26, I let you know that we were seeking a partnership with another institution.

We have been the proud home of TPC for the past several years. Many students had life-changing experiences there during the whole of its 55-year history.

Student interests change from year-to-year, decade to decade. Programs that were once can’t miss become ones to skip. We have seen declining TPC enrollment in recent years, even when factoring in COVID-19. Given the current budget environment, we intend to encourage student engagement with other off-campus experiential learning programs.

After much thought and deliberation at all levels of Albion College, we have decided to look for another institution to which Albion College can transfer ownership of TPC. We have a few institutions interested and are exploring how that partnership might look, feel and be enacted.

We have been working with the executive staff at TPC, and other staff have been informed. It is a hard choice, to be sure. But it is the right choice for Albion College. We know a new partner will bring new ideas, energy and experiences into the program. We are excited about the possibilities and look forward to further conversations with interested institutions.

Thank you for your understanding and support of your colleagues who this change may impact. I am sure they would appreciate a note or email. We will keep you informed as we make progress.

If you have questions, please email or call my office.

Best regards,

Joe Calvaruso, ’78
Interim President
