Student Update from Dean of Students

August 31, 2022

Dear students,

Thank you for your patience as we continue to navigate the current power outage. Earlier this afternoon, we received word that we should plan for continued outages through Friday, Sept. 2. Shortly after that information was received, College leadership met to discuss plans to ensure the continued health, safety and well-being of our entire community.

We’ve made the difficult decision to cancel classes through the end of the week. Campus residences will reopen Monday at noon, and classes will resume on campus Tuesday, Sept. 6. If power is restored to campus before Friday, we will be in contact about virtual class options. We are encouraging students who have the ability to return home to do so at this time. We understand this will not be possible for everyone, so we will, of course, support you if you must remain on campus. Please fill out this form no later than 8 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31 to let us know your plans. Our No. 1 priority is to ensure that we’re able to support you if you choose to remain on campus, so providing this information is crucial.

Student Development staff will be present on campus throughout the outage. We want to remind you of the following:

  • Baldwin Dining Hall is open for breakfast from 7-9:30 a.m., lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and dinner from 5-8 p.m.
  • Campus Safety is offering loans of flashlights on a first-come, first-served basis (as well as phone charging availability).
  • Baldwin Hall and the Science Atrium have strong wifi signals and a generator-backed power supply for charging devices, and the Ludington Center will be open Wednesday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • The College will offer charging stations under the tent on the Quad beginning Wednesday, Aug. 31 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

For those who are leaving campus, please throw away any food that may spoil and make sure to take trash to the dumpster. If you’ve borrowed flashlights from Campus Safety, please return them before you leave campus.

Please note that Briton Bash, which was originally scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 31, will be rescheduled to Wednesday, Sept. 7 from 4:30-7 p.m. Fall student athletes will receive communication from their coaches about scheduled athletic events. All other campus events will be postponed.

We appreciate your continued cooperation and willingness to be flexible through this unpredictable situation. We will continue to share updates as we have them. Should you have any questions, please contact Campus Safety at (517) 629-5610.

Leroy Wright,
Vice President for Student Development and
Dean of Students
