JAN. 12 — UPDATE REGARDING WINTER STORM WARNING

The City of Albion has declared a Snow Emergency Effective Friday, January 12, 2024, at 8:00 PM through Sunday, January 14, 2024, at 8:00 AM.

During a declared snow removal emergency, parking on public streets is prohibited. Any person who owns or is in the control of a vehicle that violates this order shall be subject to fines and costs, and the motor vehicle may be removed from the street by the Albion Department of Public Safety.

Many students will be arriving on-campus during this time frame. We urge all students on-campus to park their vehicle in a student parking lot during this snow emergency.

We will continue to provide updates should the duration of this Snow Emergency change.

JAN. 11 — WINTER STORM WARNING

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for our area beginning Friday afternoon and lasting through Saturday evening. A potential of 5-9 total inches of snow is forecast, along with freezing temperatures and heavy winds up to 50 mph. Campus offices will close as early as 12 p.m., tomorrow, Friday, Jan. 12, to ensure employees are able to travel home safely.

As in any inclement weather situation, the weather conditions where you are may be different from the conditions in Albion. The College does not advise employees to take unwarranted risks when traveling to and from work in the event of inclement weather. Each person should exercise their best judgment with regard to road conditions and other safety concerns. Road conditions in areas away from Albion may be worse than around the campus area. Therefore, no employee should come to work if the conditions they are facing are felt to be unsafe.

Grounds staff will be on campus beginning at 6 a.m. tomorrow and Saturday and will be focused on clearing residential spaces as a priority over the weekend. There may be times when walkways and parking lots are snow covered and slippery, so please keep that in mind when walking or driving around campus. See the College Snow Removal Plan for more details on the campus snow removal process.

Listed below are measures you should consider during winter weather:

  • Check your email and text frequently for any messages from the College regarding the impact of this storm.
  • Make sure your cell phone and laptop are fully charged right now, and keep them that way throughout today and overnight.
  • If you need to be outside during the storm, be sure that you are wearing boots and proper clothing.
  • Be alert for downed trees and power lines-do not approach them, and report them to Campus Safety.
  • Use the salt buckets that are provided at the entrance to each residential building to frequently spread salt on building entrances and the sidewalks and stairways that lead up to them.

In partnership with the City of Albion and Calhoun County Officials, we will continue to monitor weather reports throughout the duration of the storm and if conditions change, updates will be issued via email, text, and on albion.edu.

Please be extra careful if you have to drive or walk around campus. If you are experiencing a life threatening emergency or you are concerned about your safety call 517-629-1234 or 911.
