Clinical Experience

The Fritz Shurmur Center for Teacher Development plays a central role in teacher candidates’ clinical experience. For example, the Center establishes partnerships with local educators and school communities, purchases materials of practice to use in classrooms with children and youth, scaffolds teacher candidates’ learning and progress, and arranges professional development opportunities for teacher candidates and in-service teachers who mentor them. We call this experience Maemester: it happens in the spring semester of the junior year, is connected to a course, and includes an extended experience of three weeks immediately following the regular semester.
