Gustavo Bejar
Visiting Assistant Professor
Dr. Gustavo Bejar is a volcanologist studying the mechanisms of generation and propagation of lahars, dangerous volcanic debris flows that can cause great devastation. Dr. Bejar employs a combination of seismology, hydrology, and machine learning to characterize the source and activity of these flows and to develop accessible and affordable tools that can automatically identify seismic waves produced by lahars vs. other types of volcanic phenomena. His work is currently being tested for implementation at volcanic observatories in Guatemala, where lahars frequently threaten the local population. Dr. Bejar’s experience includes the study of volcanic systems in his home country of Ecuador, as well as Guatemala, the US, Mexico, and Italy. As a National Geographic Explorer, Dr. Bejar has had the opportunity to expand the scope of his research to incorporate remote sensing as a way to enhance his outputs, engage undergraduate and graduate students in field research opportunities, and share his enthusiasm for natural hazard research with the public.
