Brit Books Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
General
What is Brit Books?
Albion’s course material program, Brit Books, is administered through the Albion Online Bookstore in partnership with VitalSource and provides all students with all of their required course materials on the first day of class at one affordable price.
How is this program beneficial to all students?
Although all students pay the same tuition and fees, regardless of their major, there is still a financial disparity in the costs of textbooks and other course materials. To address this issue and promote equal academic opportunities for all students, this program adopts a pricing model for course materials that aligns with the other costs of attendance. By doing so, it aims to reduce the financial disparity and ensure that all students, regardless of their field of study, have access to the educational resources they need in order to succeed.
Where can I find one list with everything I need for the term?
Visit the website at albion.textbookx.com and log into the website with your Albion account. Your “Student Homepage” will appear which will list all of the courses that you are registered for plus all of the materials that you will receive.
Is this a campus-wide program?
Yes, all students at Albion are included in this program.
Do I have to verify my order before it is delivered?
No, the online bookstore will send a confirmation email so that you know what materials you will be receiving, but you do not need to take any action to ensure the materials are delivered.
Can I opt out of the program and buy course material from another store?
Yes, participation in Brit Books is optional. You can choose to opt out if you like, though we strongly encourage everyone to take advantage of this program because it offers discounted course materials with the advantage of being ready for your classes on the first day. Students may opt out each semester if they prefer to purchase their materials independently.
- How to Opt Out: Log into albion.textbookx.com using your Albion College credentials and follow the instructions to opt out.
If you want to opt out of the program, you can do so on the Courses page through the “Opt Out” link at the top. You can opt in again up until the listed due date. If you’re considering opting out, please review your required materials first—many students find the bundled cost is significantly lower than purchasing individually.
Steps to Opt Out:
- Go to Albion.TextbookX.com and log in with your Albion College credentials.
- You’ll see all your registered courses and the materials included in the Brit Books program.
- If you choose not to participate, you can opt out of the program for the term by selecting “Opt Out” at the top of your homepage.
- Please review the opt-out deadline listed on the site — after this date, charges are finalized and materials are non-refundable.
If you opt out, you will be responsible for obtaining course materials on your own. You can choose to buy from other vendors or from the online bookstore on a title-by-title basis.
IMPORTANT: Once you opt out, you will be opting out of all courses for the term and digital access will no longer be available in Moodle Course Webs. If you opt out after materials have been shipped, you still need to pick up your books and return them by the add/drop due date so you are not charged.
- Deadline for Spring 2026: February 2, 2026.
- What to Expect: Students who opt out are responsible for obtaining all required materials on their own and will not receive bundled pricing or automatic delivery.
Access
Are the course materials associated with my courses physical or digital?
This program provides a mix of physical and digital texts and often depends on faculty choice and availability. You can log into your bookstore account to see which items are physical and which are digital.
You can access your digital materials in two ways — through Moodle or directly from your eLibrary.
Option 1: Through Moodle Course Webs
- Log into Moodle Course Webs and open your course.
- Click the Brit Books link.
- Find your title and select “Read Now” to open it in VitalSource Bookshelf (eLibrary).
- If a title is Courseware, there will be directions for how to access the material – this can be different by publisher.
Option 2: Through Your eLibrary on Albion.TextbookX.com
- Visit Albion.TextbookX.com and log in with your student account.
- Click your username at the top right of the website, then select “eLibrary.”
- Locate your material and click “Access Now.” This will direct you to VitalSource Bookshelf (eLibrary).
- If you’re already logged into Bookshelf, you’ll go straight to your materials.
- If not, log in with your existing Bookshelf account. If you don’t have one, create an account using your Albion College email.
- Once logged into Bookshelf, you’ll be automatically redirected to your materials.
Where do I pick up my physical books?
You will receive an email when your materials are available for pickup instructing you to pick up any physical course materials at The Brit Shop, Albion’s designated campus pickup location.
What happens if I don't pick up my books?
The school will send out several notifications reminding you to pick up your books. If you do not pick them up, you will still be charged for the materials. Abandoned items will become property of the school.
Do I own my books?
Yes. Students own the physical course materials supplied through Brit Books unless they opt out of the Brit Books program (see instructions below on how to opt out), drop the course, or a faculty member changes their course material adoption. In those cases, returns may be required; follow the online bookstore’s return policy and deadlines.
Do I need to return physical books at the end of the term?
No, you will own the textbooks at the end of the term. For digital course materials, you may have time limits on how long you can access them. You can review expiration dates in your bookstore eLibrary account.
How do I access my digital course materials?
All digital course material access information will be emailed to you on or before the first day of class. Depending on the item, materials will be available through your Moodle Course Webs account, a publisher website, or through VitalSource. If you ever need a reminder about what digital course materials you should have access to, visit your eLibrary in your bookstore account to see a master list.
Do digital materials expire?
Yes. Digital course materials include an access period that typically ends when the term ends. Some courses may offer longer access windows depending on the publisher. Your specific expiration date appears in your VitalSource Bookshelf® (eLibrary).
One of the items I am receiving is a digital text. Can I get a physical book instead?
Brit Books provides a mix of physical and digital textbooks. If a digital-only text is assigned, students have the option to purchase a print accompaniment in addition to the digital text that they will automatically receive as part of the program. If you wish to buy physical texts, you can select them and check out as you would on any other ecommerce website. Pay with credit, debit, PayPal, Google Pay, or ApplePay.
Are the digital items fully accessible?
Vitalsource, the main platform through which the online bookstore delivers digital items, is fully accessible. If physical copies of materials are needed, students should contact the school’s accessibility office on a case-by-case basis.
Costs
How much does this cost?
The cost of Brit Books is added to your student account and calculated on a flat fee per student per unit, regardless of how much each individual textbook costs. The cost is calculated at $76 per unit. For example, a student enrolled in 4 units will pay $304 total for all required materials for the semester.
How is payment processed?
Charges are included on your student account based on the number of units you register for in the semester.
What happens if I drop a class? Will I get a refund?
Refunds will be added to your student account if you opt out by the published deadline.
What happens if I drop or add a course?
Adding a class: the online bookstore will continually check for new enrollments in classes up until the add/drop date, so any new materials that are needed will continue to be processed. To check the delivery status, visit your bookstore account and click “Track.”
Dropping a class: If physical items were delivered to you, you will receive an email with return instructions. For digital course materials that have not been accessed, codes will be deactivated and you will no longer have access to the materials. If you have already accessed digital course materials for dropped courses, please contact the online bookstore for further instructions.
