Petition for Special Housing Accommodation

While the classroom is at the heart of the educational mission of Albion College, as a residential college, Albion also believes strongly in the personal growth and learning that comes when students share living space with roommates on campus. Therefore, most student rooms are double occupancy. Living in a single occupancy room or living in housing not owned by Albion College is an exception to the expectations of Albion College.

Medical Single Room Petitions

A limited number of rooms have been designated as single occupancy (based on square footage) and are reserved for students with medical conditions (this includes but is not limited to health conditions such as diabetes using insulin shots, allergies, an emotional or psychological reason, and/or learning disability) which require a single room. Medical single rooms are primarily available in Wesley and Ingham Halls. Students must submit a Special Housing Accommodation Petition to be considered for a medical single.

Students who were approved for a medical single room for the 2016-2017 academic year in the form of a single occupancy (based on square footage) room are not guaranteed approval for a special housing accommodation from one academic year to the next. Students must reapply every year for a medical single. Students who regularly participate in Albion College’s support services may sign a release of information form with the appropriate department in which the student is a regular client (for example, Student Health Services, Counseling Services, Learning Support Services) so that the College staff who serve on the Petition Committee may discuss the applicant’s request with the support service Director familiar with a student’s situation.

There may be an additional cost per semester for a medical single. Because of the limited number of single occupancy rooms, students are strongly encouraged to find a roommate(s) and participate in Room Selection while waiting to learn if they will be assigned a medical single room. Applicants will be notified of decisions by email.

To obtain a Petition for a Special Housing Accommodation, please contact the Office of Residential Life and schedule an appointment. Petitions including required documentation for Medical Single rooms are due Tuesday, March 14, 2017 by 4:00 PM. Petitions received after the deadline will not be accepted.

**Please note that the Petitions Committee only meets once annually. All decisions being rendered are for the 2017-2018 Academic Year. Therefore, if a student is interested in Petitioning for a Special Housing Accommodation for Spring 2018, they should submit their Petition during the Spring 2017 Room Selection Process. Students should plan accordingly.

Double as Single (Private Room) Requests

Students may request a private room in the form of a double as a single (double occupancy, based on square footage). Approval of requests for a private room will be based on space available and will take place during the summer after Room Selection and the Spring semester have ended. Therefore, students will need to find a roommate(s) and participate in Room Selection as usual to secure housing for the following year. Students will be notified by email during the summer if they have been approved for a private room.

Students who were approved for a private room for the 2016-2017  academic year in the form of a single as a double are not guaranteed approval from one academic year to the next. There will be an additional cost per semester for a private room (double as a single).

Petition to Reside in Non-College Owned Housing

If a student has specific conditions that require a special housing accommodation that cannot be met by the College, the student must complete a Petition to Reside in Non-College Owned Housing. Through this petition process, students must describe the specific details for the type of housing accommodation the students needs and the reasons for the special housing accommodation. Students who regularly participate in Albion College's suppor t services may sign a release of information form with the approriate department in which the studnet is a regular client (i.e. Student Health Services, Counseling Services, Learning Support Services) so that the College staff who servce on the Petitions Committee may discuss the applicant's request with the support service Director familiar with a student's situation.

Please Note: Students who were approved for a special housing accommodation for 2016-2017 to reside in Non-College Owned housing are not guaranteed approval from one academic year to the next. A petition to reside in Non-College Owned housing must be reviewed through the Office of Residential Life on an annual basis.

The opportunity to live in housing not owned by Albion College is an exception to the requirement that all students reside in College housing. Students are advised not to enter into a lease agreement unless they first receive notification that their petition has been approved.

Students are strongly encouraged to find a roommate(s) and participate in another phase of Room Selection while waiting to learn if their petition has been approved. Applicants will be notified of decisions by email.
