Albion College names Todd Hibbs as new athletics director

Albion College has named Todd Hibbs as its next athletics director. The appointment is effective April 1.
“Albion College has granted me a tremendous privilege to become its next director of athletics,” said Hibbs. “I am eager to lead from a position of knowing that excellence is achievable, when individuals, despite differences, can come together and choose daily to live the lifestyle of champions.”
“Todd has demonstrated the depth of his skills and was such a great fit for this position. We look forward to great things as he helps Albion athletics continue its strong winning traditions,” said Joe Calvaruso, interim president of Albion College.
“We are excited for him to share his depth and breadth of experience not only in athletics but also in higher education and DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) work,” said Leroy Wright, vice president of student development and dean of students at Albion College. “He’s focused on student athletes and mentoring coaches. He values belonging, mental health and well-being, as well as being committed to elevating, and celebrating all that matters at Albion College and in the MIAA.”
Hibbs said he is excited to join Albion College in his new role and become part of the great-scholar athlete tradition that makes this institution a leader in the liberal arts. Noting the unique Albion experience that extends far beyond the playing field and classroom and into the arts, institutes and centers. Hibbs said he is grateful for to both Calvaruso, Wright and all Britons who engaged in the search process.
Hibbs has been the assistant athletics director for development and external relations, as well as the director of wrestling, at Alma since 2021. He served as Alma’s head wrestling coach from 2011-16 before leaving to pursue his doctorate degree at Central Michigan University.
During his tenure at Alma, he helped the school become one of the NCAA’s elite programs academically. Alma ranked as high as second in academic standing for Division III and featured eight National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar All-Americans. He also helped raise nearly $4 million for a new addition to the Alma athletics center.
Before joining Alma, Hibbs served as the director of athletics for Hiram College in Ohio from 2019-20.
Prior to Alma, Hibbs served as vice president for advancement, assistant professor and head wrestling coach at Olivet College from 2004-11. Hibbs worked at Michigan State University in several capacities from 1990-2000.
Hibbs is currently working on his doctoral degree at Central Michigan University, with expected completion later this year. He has a master’s degree in health education and human performance from Michigan State University and a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Mount Union.
He is also a member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
