Earn an Experiential Certificate in: Global and Community Health


The Wilson Medical Institute offers an Experiential Certificate in Global and Community Health. Students interested in helping others improve their lives and enhance quality of life in a community by blending healthcare with public health and human services should consider earning a certificate in global and community health. Students begin this program by participating in purpose workshops before starting formal content below.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this certificate, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of major issues in global and community health.
  • Understand the relationship between environmental factors and community health.
  • Address behavioral, social, and cultural factors that impact population health.

Purpose Courses

Students will choose academic courses through Albion College in consultation with their certificate advisor. Courses should introduce issues relevant to Emergency Medicine. The following courses are recommendations. Other courses may be approved by the Director of the Wilson Institute for Medicine.

  • COMM 310: Health Disparities
  • PHIL 308: Biomedical Ethics
  • PSYC 204: Research Methods and Statistics I

Professional Development

Professional development hours can be fulfilled through any relevant Albion College training including workshops and innovation badges offered through the School for Public Purpose and Professional Advancement and college programs. External certifications and professional training offered by third party providers may also be approved by SPP staff.  

  • Workshops, primarily offered through the Wilson Institute for Medicine and programs within SPP
  • Guest speakers
  • Summit Pointe mental health trainings
  • Trauma-Informed Community Health Initiative: Starr Commonwealth
  • Leadership position – Global Medical Brigades

Experiential Learning

Students will design or select the appropriate number of experiential learning hours, including community engaged experiential learning hours, for their catalog year.

  • Kids Cardiac Life Support
  • Internship – Albion Healthcare Alliance
  • Internship at The Philadelphia Center in area related to Community Health, public health, or human services
  • Medical Shadowing with the Red Cross in Oaxaca, Mexico
  • Learn Medical Spanish and Comparative Health Care Systems in Buenos Aires, Argentina
  • Medical Practica in Aberdeen, Scotland
  • Global Medical Brigades 

This program promotes student and staff/faculty interaction through group discussions. Program objectives are evaluated through pre and post assessments and student reflections.
