If you are experiencing a life threatening emergency or you are concerned about your safety call 517/629-1234 or 911
We all experience times of change and transition in our lives. Sometimes this process is orderly and understandable. At other times it can be rapid, chaotic, and upsetting. Understanding, coping, and dealing with these times can be difficult. When we need help, we often turn to family and friends. Sometimes we need the assistance of a professional trained to work with people in the process of exploring and solving problems in their lives.
We would like to welcome you to Counseling Services with the hope that our services will be helpful to you.
There are many ways to access Counseling Services:
- To schedule an initial appointment — call Counseling Services to speak with our secretary. She will take down information and schedule an initial consultation for you with a counselor. She will also direct you to our on-line intake form to fill out and submit for your initial consultation. This form will help your counselor better understand your current concerns and goals for counseling. Appointments are usually scheduled within one week of your initial request. At the time of your appointment your counselor will help you assess your circumstances and goals for counseling. During COVID-19 our services are provided via tele-mental health for safety.
- You can also come into Counseling Services to schedule an appointment or fill out our Intake Form and email it to us. We are located at Michigan Avenue. Our hours are 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday. During COVID-19 we are following campus physical distancing and hygiene protocols in our building. Our secretary will help you schedule an initial appointment with your counselor.
- If you are experiencing an urgent need or crisis, come directly to our office and a counselor will meet with you as soon as someone is available.
The mission of Counseling Services (CS) is to promote the psychological well-being and personal effectiveness of Albion College students, so as to enhance their personal and academic functioning. CS assists students in overcoming personal, emotional, and psychological issues that may negatively impact their ability to reach their academic goals and to make the most of their educational experience at Albion. CS educates students about mental health and wellness issues and teaches them about healthy lifestyle choices. A core component of our mission is the promotion and affirmation of diversity in its broadest sense. We recognize that a diverse community enriches our campus and enhances opportunities for human understanding, both of which contribute to the learning environment for all. CS has a strong commitment to meeting the needs of diverse people. In all clinical, assessment, training, psychiatric, program, and outreach services we strive to create an environment where all people feel welcome and respected. As a staff, we attempt to facilitate mutual respect and understanding among people of diverse racial, ethnic, and national backgrounds, gender, sexual/affectional orientations, mental and physical abilities, languages, classes, ages, religion/spiritual beliefs, socioeconomic background as well as other types of diversity. We strive to nurture environments where similarities and differences among people are recognized, respects, and honored.
