Creating Career Pathways in Chicago

Two people wearing masks talking to each other.

A premier Albion College networking and mentorship event returned after last year’s pandemic hiatus, as 33 Britons gathered March 10 at Chicago’s Weinberg/Newton Gallery. Students home for spring break exchanged résumés and discussed internship and job opportunities with Chicago alumni that included Board of Trustees members Larry Schook, ’72, and Austin Baidas, ’92. (Above: Jim Anderson, ’83 (right), spoke with Carlos Paniagua Emiliano, ’23.) Interim President Joe Calvaruso, ’78, and Donna Calvaruso attended as well.

Interested in opportunities to gather with students and alumni in your area? Learn more on our Alumni Events page or contact alumniengagement@albion.edu.

MLK Convocation Draws Inspiration From Dr. King’s 1967 Book

Following a pair of postponements—one due to technical issues; the other, a snowstorm—the Albion College and Albion communities came together March 1 at the Bohm Theatre. United under the theme of “Let Us Be Dissatisfied” (inspired by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?), the presenters confronted problems in society at large as well as in Albion.

Challenge, Teamwork, Fun are Part of Equation in Global Math Competition

Three math students pose after their math competition.

For nearly 20 years, Albion College’s mathematics students have entered the Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM), a global undergraduate and high school competition managed by the Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications. Across a 99-hour span during a long mid-February weekend, three Albion teams chose from six questions, created a mathematical model and wrote a paper together.

Faculty Profile: Education’s Kyle Shanton

Dr. Kyle Shanton has dedicated his life to bilingual education and literacy. But the 35-year educator, and 15-year Albion professor, didn’t always want to be a teacher. “I first swore I would never be a teacher,” he says, adding that many people in his orbit encouraged the pursuit. “Now I’m teaching people who want to be teachers. Never say never, right?”

Laura Todd Brings Interfaith Perspective to Spiritual Wellness

A photo of Laura Todd.

“Students experience multiple dimensions of wellness or well-being, and spiritual wellness is a key part of that,” says Albion’s first assistant director for spiritual wellness. Todd, whose role reimagines the College chaplaincy, adds, “I really want to be a presence that doesn’t add more pressure to students or make spirituality into something that they have to accomplish, but instead helps to encourage them and provide them with tools for spiritual well-being.”
