The Albion College Canoe Club achieved a second-place finish in the Outdoorsman Triathlon’s Collegiate Relay Series. The event was contested Sept. 28-29 in Wesser, N.C.
Ann Armstrong, ’16, was the only team member to compete in the individual event, and she finished first in the collegiate women’s division and 12th overall. She completed the mile swim in 25:52, the 4-mile run in 42.39 and the 8-mile canoe segment in 1:48:36 for a total time of 2:57:07.
The collegiate relay event was one of the most competitive in years with seven teams representing four colleges/universities from across the country. Armstrong completed the swim in 26:17, David Watson, ’14, completed the run in 29:28, and Armstrong and David Huggins, ’14, completed the canoe in 1:32:13 for a total time of 2:27:58. The Britons overtook the team from the University of North Georgia on the paddle segment and finished second behind the team from Appalachian State University which consisted of Albion alumni Zaak Havens, ’11, his wife Kaitlyn Pospiech-Havens, ’13, and fellow Appalachian State graduate student Zach West.
Several others with Albion conections competed in the individual and relay events over the weekend. Former swimming and diving coach Keith Havens, Scott Dillery and Tom Pitt, ’88, competed on both days.
The next competitive event for the canoe club will be the Collegiate National Championships held in the spring of 2014. The location is yet to be determined.
