Presidential Search Updates

TO: Members of the Albion College Community

FROM: Mike Harrington, '85, Chair of the Presidential Search Committee

It is with honor and excitement that I introduce to you the 17th president of Albion College, Dr. Mathew B. Johnson. This is a great day for Albion and I am pleased to tell you why.

When we set about the task of finding a successor for retiring President Mauri Ditzler, I made it clear there would be some requirements for a new president that were non-negotiable. Those included continuing to build the relationship between the community of Albion and the College; maintaining and building on our academic reputation and, equally important, building on the College’s commitment to a more diverse campus that looks more like America.

In Dr. Johnson, we have found all of that and more. And we couldn’t be more proud and pleased that he has accepted the challenge of helping to write Albion’s next chapter.

Dr. Johnson comes to us from Brown University, where he most recently was the associate dean of the College for Engaged Scholarship and senior fellow and executive director of the Howard R. Swearer Center for Public Service. A first-generation college student, he grew up on a farm in upstate New York, raised under modest means, and fell in love with the concept of ideas. In short, his story is the story of many Albion College students.

He is bright, committed, engaged, driven and someone who was destined to be the president of a college soon. We are fortunate Albion was his choice.

You will learn more about Dr. Johnson as the weeks go by, but suffice it to say that the goal the presidential search committee set for itself was met—and exceeded.

I’d also like to take a moment to thank the committee—which was made up of faculty, alumni, trustees, students and non-alumni community members. Every person on the search committee worked long and hard and under circumstances few could have imagined when the process began. I am grateful for their dedication and devotion to finding the candidate best suited to serve as the next president of our College.

So let me again welcome Dr. Johnson and his partner, Dr. Shannon O’Neill, a remarkable academic mind in her own right. They are the future of Albion College, a future that is bright and limitless and within reach of all.

FROM: Mike Harrington, '85, Chair and Joey Miller, '75, Vice Chair of the Presidential Search Committee

I would like to offer this positive update on behalf of the Presidential Search Committee. I am pleased to report that the search for our next president continues to progress well and on schedule.

The search committee recently met with a small group of leading candidates for the presidency. From that group the committee is excited to share that an exceptional slate of finalists has emerged.

Our search consulting team and I indicated early in the process that the need for confidentiality might a top priority for leading candidates in our search. Indeed, that remains to be the case. Each of the candidates holds a position of significance at a fine institution. We want to honor their wishes to continue to explore this exceptional opportunity at Albion with the assurances that their engagement in our search will not become widely known at their home institutions.

Please be assured that members of the search committee are thoughtfully identifying opportunities for members of our community, beyond the search committee membership, to be engaged in the next stage of candidate evaluation. Additional student, faculty, staff, alumni and trustee representatives will meet with the finalists and help to shape the consideration of them, while still meeting the privacy wishes of our distinguished slate.

We are very pleased to report that the search for the College's next President is progressing well. The Presidential Search Committee recently met and continued its efforts to identify candidates whose backgrounds and experiences seem especially consistent with the qualities and qualifications established for the search. At this gathering, the search committee considered a robust and diverse pool of applicants and chose to advance a select group of outstanding candidates for confidential preliminary interviews.

Those interviews will take place in coming weeks after which a smaller group of candidates will be advanced for additional conversations and vetting.

If you have any questions about the search, please be in touch with us at . We will share another update soon. Until then, we thank you for your continued support.

We hope the new term is off to a great start. We are writing to share that the presidential search continues to move ahead, and we are pleased with the progress we are seeing.

The committee members met recently for an update from our search consultants from Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates and to initiate the systematic review of applications. This initial review, the first of several stages in the candidate vetting process, will continue throughout the winter and early spring.

The many-faceted process of building a strong and diverse pool of well-qualified candidates is ongoing. We ask once more for your help in identifying promising prospects or people who might be able to suggest such prospects. Please reach out to our consulting team, Julie Tea (), Susan VanGilder (), and Julie Williams-Krishnan (), with names and contact information related to any potential candidates. The nominations and suggestions that we receive from those closest to the College community may be among the most meaningful in the process of candidate generation. As a reminder, the search prospectus continues to be available for your review on the College's website.

The committee members will meet again in February to begin narrowing the pool of applicants to a smaller group for further review and evaluation.

On behalf of the search committee, we will share additional periodic updates with you throughout the process. Please feel free to reach out to us with any questions at . Thank you for your interest and support.
