Albion College, Lewis Chapel, Host Community Kwanzaa

Albion College's Black Student Alliance and Lewis Chapel AME  celebrate Kwanzaa Saturday, November 18, at 6 p.m. at Lewis Chapel (522 West Center St.).

The event will feature traditional African-American and African cuisines, along with entertainment and a program about Kwanzaa.

Kwanzaa is an African-American celebration of cultural reaffirmation, established more than 50 years ago. Kwanzaa, which means "first fruits of the harvest" in Swahili, is a spiritual, festive and joyous celebration of the oneness and goodness of life, which claims no ties to any religion. It’s celebrated for seven days, and has seven guiding principles, Umoja (unity), Kujichagulia (self-determination), Ujima (collective work and responsibility), Ujamaa (cooperative economics) , Nia (purpose(, Kuumba (creativity), and last but not least Imani (faith).

For more information, contact The Black Student Alliance at or the Office of Intercultural Affairs, 517/629-0501.
