CRE Book Author, Brian Turner, Presentation

Date: September 2014 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Duration: 1 Hour
Location: Goodrich Chapel

The Iraq war is powerfully captured through the eyes of a soldier in "Here, Bullet," a collection of poems written by U.S. Army veteran Brian Turner. Turner will discuss his work and his experiences in two presentations at Albion College on Thursday, September 4. Turner will discuss "Here, Bullet" at 1 p.m. in the College's Goodrich Chapel. At 7:30 p.m. in the Science Complex Towsley Hall, Turner will present "My Life as a Foreign Country."

Two pieces from "Here, Bullet" can be read on the Albion College website:

"Here, Bullet" is a collection of poems based on author Brian Turner's year-long deployment to Iraq as an infantry team leader. Often evoking the literary styles of poets known for writing about war, Turner's work provides a profound illustration of war without political commentary. "Here, Bullet" received critical acclaim from the Library Journal, the New York Times Review of Books, the Washington Post and numerous other national outlets.

Turner served for seven years in the U.S. Army. In 2003, he spent as year in Iraq as infantry team leader with the 3rd Stryker Brigade Comb. Turner has also lived abroad in South Korea. He holds an MFA from the University of Oregon.

Turner’s visit is sponsored by Albion College’s Year of Wellness and the Richard M. Smith Common Reading Experience (CRE). The CRE provides the first-year class with a book addressing diversity, to foster an all-campus discussion of the work including a vist from the author or related speaker.
