Class Agent: Breanna Dell Thornton,'07
Where do you live?
I live in a rural community west of Port Huron, MI.
Where do you work?
I work as a psychologist at a non-profit organization in Port Huron that provides services to several populations in Saint Clair County, e.g. developmentally-delayed and substance abuse.
Activities as a student:
I think I tried to do a little bit of everything! I played on the Women's Soccer team in 2005, worked in Dining and Hospitality, Student Volunteer Bureau, Albion Concert Choir and the Briton Singers, and Honors Society.
Why did you choose Albion?
There was something of a coastal-New England-romance that first captivated me on my first tour on campus. Like most people, I am governed by my emotions and made a decision to carve my academic career based not on school ratings or academic success but rather on gut instinct.
What is one of your favorite Albion memories?
“I could no sooner choose a favourite star in the heavens!” But a thousand such memories are my favourites! I really felt that the campus was my playground, the student body’s playground! As a working student there was access to areas of the college I might never have gotten to see, interesting friendships between staff and faculty that were distinct and authentic transitions into my adult-identity. During my first semester at Albion some of us that were in Briton Singers organized a lock-in at Goodrich Chapel. We played an amazing game of Sardines and explored the forbidden tunnels and attics of the Chapel. Looking back I wonder at the lack of supervision, or perhaps the means of guile or manipulation that had to accompany such daring escapades, but it was none of these. This was the freedom, or ‘liberal-art’ license, that Albion encouraged that made my time so poignant and treasured.
How did your experiences at Albion impact your life as an alumna?
I would hope to say I am, if not more, adventurous and ambitious in my career, relationships, and spirituality but can accept these things as a work in progress.
How do you see your role as a Class Agent?
I want to recollect the forgotten memories of our first time at Albion in the hope that it will inspire future Brits to carve out theirs.
Why do YOU give back to Albion?
I give back to Albion because I want to feel a connection with something that at one point was the center of my life… and because it's tax-deductible.
