DESCRIPTION:The Albion College Department of Music welcomes Chicago a cappella for a concert in Goodrich Chapel on Friday\, February 7\, at 7:30.  This concert is presented free of charge as part of the David L. Strickler Endowed Concert Series. \nChicago a cappella was created in 1993 with the vision of bringing together a small group of fiercely talented singers to celebrate every genre of music imaginable with equal passion and commitment.    \nChicago a cappella’s season includes concerts in Chicago and its suburban communities\, as well as special performances and informal events.  Beyond performances\, Chicago a cappella pursues its mission of furthering the art and appreciation of ensemble singing with other programs and activities\, including ¡Cantaré! Chicago\, which brings an artist from Mexico to be composer-in-residence in Chicago schools\, and HerVoice\, which mentors and promotes emerging women composers.  \nThe ensemble has released 10 recordings\, including its latest\, Miracle of Miracles on the Cedille Records label. SUMMARY:AC Reading Series - Brenda Peynado
DESCRIPTION:Brenda Peynado is a Dominican American writer of fiction\, nonfiction\, and screenplays. She often writes about Latina girlhood\, class\, race\, and commodity culture through literary realism\, magical realism and near-future science fiction. \nHer short story collection\, THE ROCK EATERS\, was published by Penguin Books in March 2021\, and listed as one of NPR.org\, and the New York Public Libraries best books of 2021. Over forty short stories appear in journals such as Tor.com\, The Georgia Review\, The Sun\, Threepenny Review\, Epoch\, Kenyon Review online\, Pleiades\, Prairie Schooner\, and elsewhere.  Her stories have won a Nelson Algren Award from the Chicago Tribune\, an O. Henry Prize\, a Pushcart Prize; inclusion in The Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy\, Best Small Fiction\, and Best Microfiction anthologies\, two Vermont Studio Center Fellowships\, and other awards. \n \n \n \n \nBrenda is also the author of the novel Time's Agent: Following humanity’s discovery of pocket worlds\, teams of academics embarked on groundbreaking exploratory missions\, eager to study this new technology and harness the potential of a seemingly limitless horizon. Archeologist Raquel and her wife\, Marlena\, once dreamed that pocket worlds held the key to solving the universe’s mysteries.
