SUMMARY:Workshop Honoring Indigenous People: Crafting and Facilitating Land Acknowledgments
DESCRIPTION:On August 3\, 1990\, President of the United States George H.W. Bush declared the month of November as National Native American Heritage Month. However\, the first “American Indian Day” was celebrated in New York City in 1916. This is our time to celebrate the traditions\, languages\, and stories of Native American culture. It is essential to acknowledge the contributions that indigenous people contribute to this nation. This heritage month will raise awareness about the unique challenges Indigenous people have faced historically and in the present. \nAlbion College’s Native American land acknowledgment:\nThe College and community of Albion reside on Anishinaabe Waki\, the traditional and contemporary land of the Anishinaabe People — the Three Fires Confederacy of Odawa\, Ojibwe and Potawatomi. Parts of what is now Michigan also include ancestral homelands of the Sauk\, Meskwaki\, Kickapoo\, Menominee\, Miami and Peoria Peoples. \nThe Office of Belonging and Campus Life would like to thank Anthropology & Sociology and Center for Sustainability & the Environment for their collaboration. Please see the flyer attached with the events.

SUMMARY:The Common Reading Experience presents "Everything Everywhere All at Once" at the Bohm Theater Sept. 19 & 20
DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Common Reading Experience presents “Everything Everywhere All at Once” at the Bohm Theater on September 19 & 20 from 6:30 – 9pm. \nThe 2023 Common Reading Experience is offering two free screenings of “Everything Everywhere All at Once” at Albion’s Historic Bohm Theatre. The first screening will be Tuesday\, Sept. 19 from 6:30-9 p.m. The second screening will be Wednesday\, Sept. 20 from 6:30-9 p.m. The film begins at 7 p.m. The concession stand will be open during these free public screenings. \nThe 2023 Common Reading Experience selection is a curated collection of easily digestible works centered on the theme of belonging\, identity and self discovery.  “Everything Everywhere All At Once” beautifully and chaotically wrestles with themes of immigration\, mental health\, parent-child dynamics\, generational trauma and the impulse many of us have to question what our lives might look like if we had made different choices. This film is notable for casting a middle-aged Asian American woman in the role of a superhero. It was the first film depicting the lives of Asian Americans to win the Oscar for Best Picture.

SUMMARY:Floods and Fences: Earth & Environment Department's 2023 Robert E. Horton Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Adriana Martinez\, PhD\, will lecture on “Floods and Fences: A Comprehensive Look at Border Wall Impacts in Eagle Pass\, Texas” as invited speaker for this year’s Robert E. Horton Lecture\, 7 p.m. Thursday\, March 30th in Norris 101\, hosted by the Earth & Environment Department.  \nDr. Martinez is an Associate Professor at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville with a joint appointment in the Department of Geography & Geographic Information Systems and the Department of Environmental Science. She is currently an American Geophysical Union (AGU) Landing Academy national fellow and was awarded the 2021-23 Hoppe Research Professor Award. Her work in geography and geomorphology spans the physical\, human\, and technical with her use of modeling\, GIS (geographic information systems)\, and drones in her research into human impacts on river systems. She is also involved in projects aimed at increasing science identity among students underrepresented in geoscience\, a project on environmental justice in St. Louis Metro East\, and she is the primary investigator on the National Science Foundation’s S-STEM Watershed Scholars program that will fund 45 low-income graduate students studying watershed science. \nThe Earth & Environment Department’s Horton lecture is named for notable alumnus Robert E. Horton\, who was born and raised in nearby Parma\, Michigan\, and graduated from Albion College in 1897. As a United States Geological Survey engineer in New York State\, he conducted pioneering studies of the movement of water in the landscape.  His insights provided an important basis for our modern understanding of stream and river dynamics\, flood impacts\, and soil erosion and conservation. His work of a century ago is echoed in the important work that Dr. Martinez and others like her do today. This event is free and open to the public.
