Power Outage Update

August 31, 2022

Power has largely been restored to Albion College — unfortunately, 1112 Porter and Munger Annex are still without. We also have numerous alarm and keycard access issues that our Facilities team is working on.

Classes will begin in a virtual or hybrid format tomorrow morning so students can come back to campus and/or participate from wherever they may be.

Staff should consult with their supervisor about if/when to resume on-site work today. Operations as normal will resume tomorrow.

As a reminder, we opted to send as many students home as possible last evening because Consumers Energy was estimating power to be out in our area through Friday morning. The President’s Cabinet met at length to assess the impact on campus operations and, of course, students being without power for that duration. It became evident that we would not be able to sustain some of our key systems for long, even on backup generators. The safest and healthiest course of action for our campus was to cancel classes and close offices to non-essential personnel.

Thank you to all — students, faculty and staff — for your flexibility and understanding as we continue to navigate the storm and its aftermath. We appreciate all who helped in the clean-up, solved problems, stood watch to keep us all safe and worked long hours to make sure things got done. Therefore we say repeatedly that we are a family. We come together to keep one another safe, secure and supported.

We will continue to provide updates as the situation warrants.
