Albion College has a full-fledged astronaut among its alumni. Last week, Josh Cassada, '95, was one of eight men and women to complete two years of training as a candidate and become an official member of the NASA astronaut corps.
First-year student Matt Kribs (left) is a violinist and plans to major in music performance, but part of his early Albion experience has included looking at lunar samples direct from NASA as part of a planetary astronomy class. "It's not every day you get to look at samples from the moon, from the Apollo spacecraft," said Kribs, who is also a member of the Gerald R. Ford Institute for Leadership in Public Policy and Service and the Prentiss M. Brown Honors Program.

Researching the age of craters on the far side of the Moon one year into a college experience is one thing. Focusing on a specific crater named decades ago for a 19th-century alumnus of the same college is something else. Marina Baker, ’17, had that unique opportunity this summer, and made initial inroads with physics professor Nicolle Zellner toward determining the age of the Moulton crater, named for 1894 Albion graduate Forest Ray Moulton, a leading American astronomer during the first half of the 20th century.
