Beau Brockett, '19, was one of 12 Michigan college students to be awarded a $1,000 scholarship earlier this month by the Michigan Press Association (MPA) Foundation.
The English-Creative Writing major from Richmond is the managing editor of The Pleiad, the Albion College student newspaper. He is also a member of the Gerald R. Ford Institute for Leadership in Public Policy and Service and runs for the men's cross country team.
“(Beau) offers a rare combination of solid news judgment, narrative storytelling skills, unflagging energy and receptiveness to criticism,” said Glenn Deutsch, visiting assistant professor of English and advisor for The Pleiad. “He’d be the first one I’d try to hire if I were at a newspaper.”
"I'm thrilled to be a recipient of the MPA's Community Journalism Scholarship, and I can't thank The Pleiad team and the English Department enough for the on-the-ground experiences they've given me," said Brockett (right), who will be recognized in May 2018 at the MPA's annual convention in East Lansing. "The most local news is often the least reported. It's great to be a part of a publication that's working to change that."
The Michigan Press Association Foundation was created in 1980 to advance community journalism by fostering learning, sponsoring research and promoting public awareness of the importance of a free press. Since 1990 it has awarded more than 220 scholarships to Michigan college juniors and seniors.
