Art major Soe Yu Nwe, '13, adds to her string of undergraduate achievements with the Michigan Ceramic Art Association's 2012 Scholarship Award. The statewide competition, intended to encourage serious students of ceramics, included a $1,000 prize.
"I thought maybe I was the only one who applied," Nwe said modestly of her reaction to the news. "But this definitely gives me confidence in applying to graduate school. It feels nice that other people are appreciating my work, not just my professor."
Nwe said she will use the scholarship primarily for travel expenses. She plans to visit several ceramics graduate programs, including a top-ranked program at Alfred University in upstate New York.
"It's a stunning prize," commented art professor Lynne Chytilo, Nwe's adviser. "The applications came from all over the state. Joy has a remarkable talent."
An international student from Burma, Nwe knew nothing about ceramics before arriving at Albion College in 2009. She has since won other juried awards for her work, along with two grants from Albion College's Foundation for Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity.
