The Albion College Institute for Healthcare Professions prepares the next generation of leading healthcare providers. These future physicians, dentists, veterinarians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, benefit from the Institute’s dedication to students’ personal and professional development. Through meaningful connections with alumni and other healthcare leaders, classroom exercises, guest lectures, and structured academic advising as well as experiential learning, community service and leadership opportunities, our students become competitive applicants for outstanding healthcare-related graduate and professional programs.
Our learning objectives are based on the Core Competencies defined by the Association of American Medical College’s Committee on Admissions as essential attributes of future healthcare students and providers.
The Institute focuses on four main areas critical for the academic, personal, and professional development of students interested in clinical healthcare careers.
Educational: course offerings (Introduction to Healthcare and Issues in Healthcare) plus outstanding academic advising about graduation requirements and prerequisite coursework for professional school.
Experiential: job shadowing, internship and practicum placements, volunteer experiences, and research opportunities both at and beyond Albion College.
Community: peer mentoring, student leadership opportunities, on-campus speakers and events, Albion’s Alpha Epsilon Delta (National Health Preprofessional Honor Society), and alumni networking.
Preparatory: entrance examinations, interview practice, letters of evaluation, personal statements, and the professional school application process.
