Britons Balance Soccer, Study of Monetary Policy

Both concentrating in the Carl A. Gerstacker Institute for Business and Management, they went to class until about 4 p.m. each day when they would go to practice or matches as midfielders for Albion’s men’s soccer team.  After soccer, the juniors would have just enough time to grab dinner and clean up before spending hours sifting through papers and debating economic policy with members of Albion’s Fed Challenge team as it prepared for its Nov. 16 regional competition in Chicago.

Though they were eventually named alternates to the Albion group that won the regional to advance to national competition against heavyweights such as Harvard University, Rutgers University, and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in Washington, D.C., Bieber and Malecke both tout how participating increased their understanding of the amount of influence the government has in moving the economy forward and created connections with professionals off campus.

Albion Appoints Nolan to Direct Gerstacker Institute

Albion College has named marketing executive Emily Nolan as director of its Carl A. Gerstacker Institute for Business and Management. The appointment was announced by President Donna Randall.

“We are truly fortunate to have attracted Emily Nolan as Gerstacker Institute director,” Randall said. “She has relevant experience in both higher education and the business world, and will bring creative ideas on how we might expand our current programs. Additionally, her global business perspective will be an invaluable resource for our students and faculty.”

Internship Allows Ankenbrandt to Connect with Baseball Players

A member of Albion College’s Carl A. Gerstacker Institute for Business and Management and the Briton baseball team, Matt Ankenbrandt, ’12, spent the spring semester in the batter’s box swinging for an internship to complete his academic requirements.

The perfect pitch for Ankenbrandt’s skill set – combining his excellent interpersonal skills and passion for baseball – was delivered like a hanging curveball in April when Dugout Media tabbed the Grandville native for a marketing position on one of its Baseball Youth Fanfest Mobile Tours. Ankenbrandt’s tour is set up through mid-August at the Cooperstown All-Star Village in upstate New York, situated a sharp line drive from the National Baseball Hall of Fame. A catcher for the Britons, Ankenbrandt talks to players ages 7-13 who visit Cooperstown for tournaments about the Akadema products he uses on the diamond.

During my internship in Shanghai, China, I was able to learn a great deal in regards to both entrepreneurship and global marketing; two fields of the business world that I am very interested in pursuing for my future career path.

On my end, I was able to provide some quality assistance to the development of the Lee & Vargas Restaurant Concepts during my time with them. The organization was able to successfully transform from a collection of 12 business ventures in Shanghai, to a total of 16 during my three month tenure. I am very proud to say that I believe my contributions to the company were most definitely a vital aspect of the creation and success of the four new concepts that were built out while I was there.
