Irene Corona-Avila, ’22

PREP Research Collaborator, UIC College of Medicine in Chicago

Education: B.A., Albion College, 2022.

While at Albion, Irene was involved as the managing editor for The Albion Pleiad, a member of the Lisa and James Wilson Institute, a Student Engagement Associate for NIH All of Us Research Program, a consultant at the Writing Center, a First-Year Experience mentor, a member of the Organization for Latinx Awareness and the creator and president of the Albion College Drip organization. She was also a participant in the Student Research Partnership program under Dr. Abigail Cahill and Dr. Fang Wang as well as in FURSCA under Dr. Craig Streu.

During Albion, Corona-Avila presented her scientific research findings at the annual Elkin R. Issac Research Symposium, University of Illinois at Chicago, and the Experimental Biology Conference in Philadelphia, PA. She also received the 2021 Promoting Academic Excellence Award, The Bernard T. Lomas Project P250 Endowed Scholarship 2021, the Rae S. Corliss, ’23 Endowed Pleiad Prize (2021;2022) and The President Peter T. Mitchell Lux Fiat Award 2022.

After landing an internship at UIC College of Pharmacy, Corona-Avila is now a PREP Research Collaborator at UIC College of Medicine in Chicago where she is studying the replication and spread of Herpes Simplex Virus type-1.
