Doug Goering began his college studies in 1960 at Flint Junior College. He transferred to Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY where he studied for two years. In 1963 he enlisted in the military; he proudly served in the Army’s Special Forces. For seven years following his military service, Doug was employed by the Flint Health Department.
Doug’s return to his studies in art was stimulated by his desire to teach at the college level. He was a graduate student instructor throughout his graduate program. He taught at Mott Community College, Edison State Community College in Ohio, the University of Arkansas, and he continued to teach at the University of Michigan.
In 1986, Doug joined the faculty at Albion College. During his 22 years at Albion, he taught all levels of drawing and painting. Throughout his career he has taken great satisfaction in his ability to interact with students. He was awarded recognition for outstanding teaching on three occasions.
As a faculty member, Doug was fully involved in all aspects of faculty governance. Additionally, he chaired the Department of Art and Art History for six years and he served as Albion’s Associate Dean of the Faculty for thirty months. At the time of his retirement, Albion College established the Professor Douglas Goering Scholarship in Art and Art History.
Doug is a painter whose work is influenced by psychological concepts of conflict (approach-approach and approach-avoidance). Doug’s work has been recognized with awards at the state, national, and international levels.
Doug and his wife Sue live in Flint where he maintains a studio.
he was nominated and selected to serve as the first emeritus Board member of the College. He dedicates himself to supporting initiatives that will maintain or improve Albion’s richly-deserved ranking among the finest liberal arts institutions in the nation. He states, “I have the greatest respect for all that distinguishes Albion College – its Board of Trustees, its talented administrative leadership team, its dedicated support staff, our devoted and compassionate faculty, and the very bright and fully-engaged individuals who comprise our fine student body.
