Image formats: GIF vs. JPG and when to use which

Common extensions for graphics are .gif and .jpg (sometimes .jpeg).
These file extensions represent the format of the graphic and are not interchangeable.
When saving a graphic it is important to save the graphic format best suited for your type of graphic.

JPG
Good aspects Use this format for cartoon style images and animations

Works well with images using very few colors

Can be made transparent, this will show the background of whatever window the image is in

  Use JPG for photos and other images with similar need for detail

Good for images which use many different colors

Can be saved to a small file with loosing much qualitya
Drawbacks fewer colors available

Not good with photos or other detail intensive images

Often has a larger file size

  Does not work well with images containing large fields of color

Cannot save animations

Cannot be transparent
(not good for buttons, bullets, etc. on websites)

Display resolution for the web

72 dpi (dots per inch) is the maximum a screen can view

anything more than this is adding unnecessary size to your image,
increases the amount of time it takes to load the website it is on, and
does look any different to the person viewing the website.
