History
Kappa Alpha Theta Fraternity was established on January 27,
1870. In a time when it was unthinkable for a woman to receive a college
education, four women joined to form an lifelong group of friendship, loyalty,
and sisterly support on Indiana Asbury's campus (now DePauw).
When Bettie Locke Hamilton was asked to wear a men's
fraternity pin as their mascot, she responded, "If you will not initiate me into
your fraternity, I will start my own." Thus, Kappa Alpha Theta was established
on January 27, 1870. Joining Bettie Locke was Alice Allen Brant, Bettie Tipton
Lindsay, and Hannah Fitch Shaw.
Because Kappa Alpha Theta was the first Greek letter
organization created for women, the word "sorority" did not exist. When the term
"sorority" was coined at the establishment of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority, Bettie
Locke stated that Theta had been formed as a fraternity, under the ideals of the
meaning of fraternity, and saw no reason to change. Kappa Alpha Theta is, and
always will be, the first women's fraternity.
