The 2009 William K. Stoffer Lecture was presented by Martin Nesbitt, ’85, at the Opening Convocation, Tuesday, Sept. 1 in Goodrich Chapel. Treasurer for Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign, Marty Nesbitt is a prominent Chicago business leader and chair of the Chicago Housing Authority. He continues to be an adviser to President Obama. As treasurer for the Obama presidential campaign, Mr. Nesbitt oversaw a fund that grew to over $700 million—the largest sum ever raised by a presidential campaign—and he assisted with strategic decision-making. He also managed the campaign finances when Mr. Obama ran for the U.S. Senate in 2004. In an interview with Albion’s alumni magazine, “Io Triumphe!,” earlier this year, Mr. Nesbitt said, “Over time I got exposed to things that informed me that anything was possible. I was as capable as anyone. . . . There were no constraints on my potential.” Individuals must capitalize on the opportunities they are given, he noted. Other convocation highlights included an honorary
doctorate granted to former Board of Trustees chair Richard L.
Baird, '78, and awarding of the second John W. Porter Endowed
Professorship.
