Gustitus Pounds Nine Kills in Volleyball Match

Kayla GustitusKayla GustitusJessica Weiler (Matteson, Ill./Marian Catholic) served up aces on consecutive points to help Albion College jump out to a 7-2 lead in the third set, but the Britons were unable to hold on in a three-set loss to Trine University in Tuesday night Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association volleyball action. Trine won the match by scores of 25-18, 25-20, 25-12.

Kayla Gustitus (Brighton/Hartland) produced one of her team-high nine kills as Albion forged a 2-2 tie and a side out in the third set. A Trine attack error, a Jalyn Ingalls (Ellsworth) kill, and Weiler’s two aces gave Albion a five-point cushion. Trine rallied to score the next four points to trim Albion’s lead to 7-6, and Sarah Radekin served five points as the Thunder took a 12-8 lead it would not relinquish.

Lauren DeLuyck’s (West Bloomfield) ace in the first set pulled Albion within two, 17-15, but Trine got a kill from Betsy Irwin and an Albion attack error to preserve the lead. DeLuyck’s kill tied the second set at 14, but Trine reeled off the next three points.

DeLuyck finished with three aces and three kills.

Irwin and Melanie Troyer reached double figures in kills for Trine with 14 and 10, respectively.
