But it’s not every day that athletes are given the opportunity to enter their surrounding community and take a hands-on approach to their learning.

Albion College baseball pitcher Brett Timmer (Jenison, senior), women’s tennis’ No. 2 singles player and 2012 all-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association first team performer Katie Blumberg (Farmington Hills, sophomore), football kicker Steve Seward (Trenton, sophomore), and women’s soccer midfielder Lindsey Lubanski (Lathrup Village, sophomore) were part of a school project charged with assisting Albion’s local government during the spring semester.

Four Britons Gain MIAA Women's Tennis Awards

Albion College, runner-up of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association in women’s tennis, was well represented when the all-league teams were released by the league publicist at the conclusion of the MIAA Tournament. Sarah Towler, a senior from Milan, was selected to receive the Sue Little Sportsmanship Award for the second consecutive year, sophomores Katie Blumberg and Marissa Cloutier achieved first team all-league status, and first-year player Irene Chen was placed on the second team.

Women's Tennis Falls in MIAA Final

Irene Chen won at No. 3 singles and Marissa Messenger and Leah Saurman picked up a win at No. 3 doubles as the Albion College women’s tennis team completed its season with a 5-2 loss to Hope College in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament championship match. Albion finished the season with a 14-6 record.
