Coach David Saenz Head Coach David SaenzDavid Saenz joined the Albion College athletic department in August, 2004 as head coach of the Britons’ volleyball program In 2004 Saenz led the Britons to their highest win total in the MIAA since 1998 as they garnered eight conference wins. Overall, Albion finished 10-15 overall, including a dramatic five-game win over Hope College for the first time since 1985. Saenz comes to the Briton program after a one-year stint as the varsity volleyball coach at Northwest High School in Jackson, and as the head coach and director of the MICA Volleyball Club. Saenz brings 20 years of collegiate coaching experience with previous positions as the head women’s volleyball coach at Butte Community College (1981-86), the head men’s volleyball coach at California State University at Chico (1983-86), the assistant volleyball coach at the University of Louisville (1986-88), and the head women’s and men’s volleyball coach at Tri-State University (1988-95). Also in the decade of the 1990s, Saenz served as the head coach for the Fort Wayne, Ind., Volleyball Club, as the varsity volleyball coach at Bishop Luers High School, and as the club director and head coach of the Circle City Volleyball Club. In 2000, Saenz was the Head of Delegation for USA Volleyball’s Michiana region high performance team. Saenz is active in the community, volunteering in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Organization. The Parma/Spring Arbor Lion’s Club, and the SAREN Smiles Foundation. Assistant CoachMichelle Manning joined the Albion College athletic department staff in August, 2004, as head coach of the Britons’ softball program. She also serves as the assistant women's volleyball coach at Albion. Manning comes to Albion after one season as the head softball and assistant women’s volleyball coach at Shenandoah University of Winchester, Va. Under Manning’s tutelage, the Shenandoah softball team enjoyed its most successful season in 12 years, as the Hornets posted a school-record five-game winning streak, achieved a runner-up finish at the Meredith Tournament, broke a 65-game losing streak against USA South Conference opponents, and placed a student-athlete on the all-USA South Conference team for the first time in four years. A 2000 graduate of Mount Union (Ohio) College, Manning began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Bethany (W.Va.) College. The Bison softball program advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament in 2002 and ’03. She was part of the East Region Coaching Staff of the Year in 2002 after Bethany won the NCAA Central Regional tournament to advance to the eight-team championship round and finished with a 32-10 record. Bethany’s softball team posted a 31-8 record in 2003. In 2002, Manning also functioned as Bethany’s head volleyball coach during a transitional period. Manning earned one letter in volleyball and four letters in softball as a student-athlete at Mount Union. In softball, she was a two-time all-Ohio Athletic Conference selection, achieving first team distinction in 1998 and second team status in 1999.
