Micunek Scores MIAA Player of the Week Award

Charlie MicunekAlbion College defender Charlie Micunek got involved on the offensive end last week, scoring the game-winning goals in the Britons’ victories over Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rivals Adrian College and Kalamazoo College, and he has been rewarded by being named the league’s Defensive Player of the Week award, league publicist Greg Chandler announced Monday.

Micunek, a first-year student from Granger, Ind., who prepped at Penn High School, got his head on a corner kick for the only goal of the contest against Adrian, and his second-half tally was the difference in Albion’s 2-1 win over Kalamazoo. They were Micunek’s first two collegiate goals.

“Charlie had a fantastic week,” Albion Coach Jerry Block said. “It starts with him being sound on the defensive end. The game-winning goals were a bonus for the team. Charlie has matured a lot and I’m proud of the work he’s done on and off the field.”

Albion (8-7-1 overall, 5-6 MIAA) sits in fifth place in the league standings, and the top four teams advance to the league tournament. The Britons have an opportunity to keep their tournament hopes alive Tuesday when they travel to Grand Rapids to tackle league-leading Calvin College. Albion will celebrate Senior Day at 2:30 p.m. Saturday when it plays host to Alma College.
