Men's Golf Slips in MIAA Standings

Scott MerrittScott MerrittALMA, Mich. – The good news for the Albion College men’s golf team is that it has two of the top players in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association in Scott Merritt (Bloomfield Hills/Lahser) and Brent Koaches (Midland/Dow). The duo kept themselves in contention for all-league awards Saturday with rounds of 74 and 79, respectively, in the league jamboree played at the Pine River Country Club.

Merritt boasts a 77-stroke average through two league rounds, tying him for fifth on the individual leader board. Koaches, who started the league second by tying for second in the jamboree at The Medalist, is tied for 14th, but his average is just three strokes off MIAA leaders Mac Boucher, Max Niehans, and Marty Predmesky.

Albion slipped in the team standings, however, as its 328 team score was the worst of the eight teams in the field. The Britons now stand seventh in the MIAA’s cumulative standings with a 36-hole total of 658. Albion trails sixth-place Calvin College by 18 strokes heading into the third jamboree Sept. 14 at the Bedford Valley Country Club in Battle Creek.
