Head Coach Mike Turner

Mike Turner; Albion College men's basketball head coachMike Turner is in his 31st season as the head men's basketball coach at Albion College, after leading the Britons to back-to-back 20-win seasons for the second time in school history.

The Britons finished the 2003-04 season with an overall record of 20-7. Coupled with the 23 wins during the 2002-03 campaign, Albion has won more games than in any other two-year period in school history.

In Turner's 30 years on the sideline, the Britons have posted a record of 452-278 (.619 winning percentage).

No Albion coach has made an impact for so long a time on the Briton athletic scene. That includes such notables as Elkin Isaac, Dale Sprankle, and Walter Sprandel. Turner has a combined 58 seasons of head coaching experience at Albion, including 29 in men's golf. Turner-coached teams have earned seven league championships -- three in golf and four in basketball -- plus NCAA tournament appearances in basketball in 1978, 1979 and 1998. The 1978 team finished third in the Division III tournament.

Turner played basketball and soccer in his student days at Albion before graduation in 1969. He returned to the College after receiving his masters' degree at the University of Arizona in 1970, stepping into the head coaching duties for basketball in 1974.

Turner is a native of Cadillac and a graduate of West Branch High School. His wife, Peg, is a 1969 Albion graduate and teacher in the Albion Public Schools. Peg was selected the district's Teacher of the Year for the 1999-2000 academic year.

The Turners have two daughters. Amy, a Northwestern University graduate, is a reporter/anchor for WXMI Fox 17 television in Grand Rapids. Tracy, who received a bachelor's degree from DePauw University and a master's from the Harvard School of Education, is a teacher in the East Grand Rapids Schools.

Associate Head Coach Jody May

Jody May, Albion College men's basketball associate coachJody May, who has served as the assistant men's basketball coach at Albion College since 1996, was promoted to associate head coach prior to the 2002-03 season.

With May on the bench assisting head coach Mike Turner, the Britons have compiled a 126-60 overall record. In 1998, Albion earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament by winning the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association tournament. In 1999, the Britons were defeated in overtime in the MIAA tournament title game. Albion also reached the MIAA tournament title game in 2003, and advanced to the semifinal round of the league tournament in 2000, 2002 and 2004.

May also serves as the head coach of the junior varsity program.

A native of Elida, Ohio, May came to Albion after two seasons with the men's basketball program at Hanover College of Indiana.

A captain on the 1993 NCAA Division III championship squad at Ohio Northern University, May moved into the coaching ranks immediately upon graduation in the spring of 1993. May served as an assistant at Bluffton (Ohio) College for two seasons while earning his master's degree at Bowling Green State (Ohio) University.

Assistant Coach Marcus Gill

Marcus Gill, Albion College men's basketball assistant coachMarcus Gill, a three-year letterwinner in the Albion College men's basketball program, will trade in his purple and gold uniform for a whistle and suit as he makes the transition from player to assistant coach for the 2004-2005 campaign.

Gill was a member of two Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship squads during his playing days, earning a basketball title in 2003 and adding a track & field championship in 2004.

On the basketball court, Gill was a vocal and emotional leader for the Britons. He started 25 of 27 games his senior season, averaging 5.6 points and 3.7 assists per game. He saved one of his best performances for late in the season, scoring a career-high 20 points in a victory over Hope at the Holland Civic Center.

Assistant Coach Kevin White

Kevin White, Albion College men's basketball assistant coachKevin White is in his first season as an assistant coach in the Albion College men's basketball program, but he is no stranger to the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. White comes to the Briton program after a three-year stint as the head coach of the junior varsity men's basketball team at Kalamazoo College.

White competed in football, basketball, and track at Kalamazoo Hackett High School. He earned letters in all three sports and achieved all-conference recognition in football and basketball his junior and senior years. He then moved on the Glen Oaks Community College, where he played basketball for two years.

White began his coaching career at the high school level with a year on the basketball staff at Hackett High School and three years as the head freshman football coach at Loy Norrix High School. He has worked camps at Oakland University, Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo Valley Community College.

In addition to coaching, White served as a guest speaker for the Boys & Girls Club of Kalamazoo and at Portage West Middle School.
