Welcome Albion College is home to both field and laboratory
studies of nurse sharks (Ginglymostoma cirratum). The
field studies explore the life history of nurse sharks in the
Florida Keys and in recent years have examined many aspects of the
reproductive biology and behaviors of nurse sharks in the Dry Tortugas
island chain, 78 miles from Key West.

Collaborations with Harold "Wes" Pratt of Mote Marine Laboratory have
provided insight into the behaviors and social interactions of sharks in
the only systematic study of mating behavior in the wild ever
undertaken.

The projects conducted on Albion's campus include investigations into
sensory system function in nurse sharks in collaboration with the
University of Michigan's Department of Biomedical Engineering and
captive maintenance and breeding of bamboo sharks. (Photograph ©Jeffrey C. Carrier.
