Aunt Ida has a wax museum.
She figures that her figures
represent the righteous few;
waxy pastors, holy rollers,
evangelized and televised.
They stand with coiffed hair
and pinky rings and Good Boos
underarm in scenes of fiery preaching,
miracle healing, smooth-spoken
pleading for donations by the hour.
All aunt Ida's patrons marvel
at the intricate nature
of the ministers' bald heads
and sweaty brows, how their eyes
decide to sermonize toward all
corners of the room.
Her patrons wonder if fathers
and friars alike escape
at night from their dioramas
to roam the streets.
Walking stiff like giant unburned candles,
searching in department store displays,
and round the fountain in the park
for some mannequin or statue soul to save.
But by morning they've returned
to wait the long and bright-harsh
day in dark, air-conditioned comfort.
For these are waxy pastors,
suited for museums,
and wary of the puddles they'd become
beneath the hot and melting sun.
