Computer System
Requirements 2008-2009
If you are purchasing a new computer we
recommend purchasing a wireless laptop for mobility, but the
choice is one of personal preference.
We have purchasing discount arrangements with Dell, CDWG, and Apple Computer, or
you may purchase from the vendor of your choice. To purchase
direct from CDWG, Dell or Apple, click the company icon on the right.
Below are the
specifications that we recommend for new computers:
Operating
Systems:
Windows Vista above Home Basic with Service Pack 1, or
Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2
(genuine
versions only) - XP Service Pack 2 update is available from
Windows Update.
MAC - OS X version 10.4 "Tiger" or 10.5 "Leopard"
Hardware Configuration:
Hard drive: 60 gigabytes or better
Memory (RAM): 2 gigabytes
DVD burner (DVD-RW) or CDRW/DVD player combo
drive
Integrated Network Card (standard on new computers) with RJ45
Ethernet cable.
802.11b/g
wireless network interface card for laptop computers (standard on most
new computers).
IMPORTANT WIRELESS NOTE: While
wireless access is available in the residence halls, it is not
guaranteed in student rooms, therefore ALL students
should bring an Ethernet (RJ45) cable long enough to reach from
the computer to the port in the wall.
Removable storage:
USB 2.0 Jump/Flash Drive This is a portable
USB storage device, allowing quick and easy transferring of data
between computers.
Printer:
While students can use their
print
credits to print to college provided printers, many prefer the
convenience of personal printer. Printer type is a matter of
personal preference.
Free Software:
There is no
need to purchase Microsoft Office software (Mac and PC) or antivirus
subscriptions for Windows computers. The college provides Office and
other applications free of charge.

Requirements:
If you already have a computer or are purchasing an older model computer, you
need to be sure your computer meets these minimum system requirements:
Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (genuine
version only) or higher, or Mac OS X version 10.4
"Tiger"
1 Gb or more RAM
10 Gigabyte Free Disk Space
Installed 10/100 Ethernet Card
Ethernet Cable (RJ45)
Wireless Access
Points:
Wireless access points are permitted but wireless routers, including
AirPort base stations are not permitted.

Important:
You should have your Windows or MAC OS X Operating System disk(s)
with you to aid in troubleshooting and to resolve
computer problems. Some manufacturers include a copy of your
system disks on your hard drive. Check your documentation or contact the
manufacturer.
