Dr.
Sarianna Metso
Dr. Metso joined us at the beginning of the fall semester 2000. She is
a native of Finland, and holds the Doctor of Theology (the equivalent of the
Ph.D. in the American system) from the University of
Helsinki. She has also studied in Germany and England, and was a
postdoctoral research associate at the University of Notre Dame. While she
will be teaching in the area of biblical studies (both Hebrew Bible and
Christian Scriptures) and Judaica at Albion, her
special area of expertise is in the Dead Sea Scrolls. Her doctoral
dissertation, which has been published by E. J. Brill in the Netherlands, was
titled "The Textual Development of the Qumran Community Rule."
She has also authored a number of scholarly articles. She has lectured on the Dead Sea Scrolls at Oxford, Cambridge, Copenhagen,
Jerusalem, Princeton, Chicago, and at the 1996 International Dead Sea Scrolls
Conference at Provo, Utah. She has previously taught at Trinity
Western University in Canada. Her language skills include: Hebrew
(biblical, Qumran, Mishnaic,), Greek, Latin, Aramaic, Coptic, Syriac [ancient],
and English, Finnish, German, Swedish, and French.
Dr. Metso was named the Arthur A. Anderson New Teacher of the Year at Honors
Convocation in April 2001.
