Awards, Honors, and Financial Aid

The John and Williemay Cheek Award is presented each year to the outstanding senior major in the department. A book award is also presented to the outstanding graduating senior/s in the department. Students who major in Religious Studies are not thereby prevented from receiving federal or state need- based financial aid.

 

Marci R. Nelson

The winner of the John and Williemay Cheek award for the 2003-2004 year is Marci R. Nelson.  Marci is a double major in Religious Studies and Anthropology/Sociology.  Her Honors Thesis titled: "The Pineapple Story: Exploring the Use of Narrative in Evangelical Missions" earned her the Edmund and Kathleen Jenkins Award at the Honors Convocation in April 2004.

The winner of the John and Williemay Cheek award for the 2000-2001 year was Heather Schmidt.  Heather was a double major in biology and religious studies.  Heather wrote a Religious Studies Departmental Honors Thesis titled: "Sinful Thoughts: An Exegetical Study of Genesis 3 and the Place of the Reason-Faith Dichotomy in the Three Biblical Religions."
