Professional School Application Process

Required Course Work

If you are considering a career in medicine or another health profession, there are a series of courses that you must take before applying to professional school. For most doctoral programs, the requirements are nearly identical; however, for  other health professions programs, the requirements are quite varied.  You are responsible for knowing the admission requirements of the individual schools to which you apply. Consult specific school bulletins or the approved academic requirements guides listed below for individual schools' requirements.

Allopathic Medical Schools Dental Schools
Osteopathic Medical Schools Pharmacy Schools
Physician Assistant Programs Physical Therapy Programs
Veterinary Medical Schools Peterson's Guide to Graduate Schools

The following curricula are based on the most common academic requirements for admission to health profession schools:

Medical/Dental/Veterinary/Pharmacy Curriculum

The basic prerequisites for most Human Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Optometry, Podiatry, and Chiropractic programs consist of the following courses:

  • biology (1 year - with lab)

  • upper-level biology (microbiology, physiology, genetics, etc. may be required)

  • general/inorganic chemistry (1 year - with lab)

  • organic chemistry (1 year - with lab)

  • physics (1 year - with lab)

  • biochemistry or molecular biology (required or strongly recommended)

  • mathematics (through trigonometry) -- Preoptometry students must take one semester of calculus.  Individual  schools and programs may also require calculus.

  • introductory psychology (strongly recommended)

  • English composition (1 course)

  • English literature (1 course)

The basic science courses must be completed before taking the MCAT, DAT, or PCAT (except for physics for the DAT) since those subjects comprise a large portion of these tests.

Below are two typical, sample schedules that allow students to complete their required course work by the end of their junior year.  Course work may be spread over four years for students who desire to take a year or two off before beginning professional school studies.  (Note: These schedules do not include math courses since math requirements vary widely between professional schools.  Students placed in Math 125 (Trigonometry/ Pre-Calculus) during SOAR should plan to take the class during their first two years at Albion.)

Other Health Professions Programs

Some health professions programs such as Nursing, Genetic Counseling, Public Health, and Health Administration often do not have specific prerequisites; however, you should still consult the bulletins for individual graduate programs to determine whether any prerequisites do exist.

Other health professions programs such as Athletic Training and Speech Pathology/Audiology often require specialized bachelor's degrees.
