Required Course WorkIf you are considering a career in medicine or another health profession, there are a series of courses that you must take before applying to professional school. For most doctoral programs, the requirements are nearly identical; however, for other health professions programs, the requirements are quite varied. You are responsible for knowing the admission requirements of the individual schools to which you apply. Consult specific school bulletins or the approved academic requirements guides listed below for individual schools' requirements. The following curricula are based on the most common academic requirements for admission to health profession schools: Medical/Dental/Veterinary/Pharmacy CurriculumThe basic prerequisites for most Human Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Optometry, Podiatry, and Chiropractic programs consist of the following courses:
The basic science courses must be completed before taking the MCAT, DAT, or PCAT (except for physics for the DAT) since those subjects comprise a large portion of these tests. Below are two typical, sample schedules that allow students to complete their required course work by the end of their junior year. Course work may be spread over four years for students who desire to take a year or two off before beginning professional school studies. (Note: These schedules do not include math courses since math requirements vary widely between professional schools. Students placed in Math 125 (Trigonometry/ Pre-Calculus) during SOAR should plan to take the class during their first two years at Albion.)
^ "Biology xxx" refers to any upper-level biology course. Substitute an appropriate major course for students whose major is something other than Biology.
* This schedule is ideal for students who do not want to take two science courses their first semester or who intend to major in a discipline other than Biology or Chemistry. Courses in parentheses ( ) can be taken either semester listed.
Physician Assistant/Physical Therapy CurriculumThe basic prerequisites for most Physical Therapy and Physician Assistant programs are quite varied and typically consist of some combination of the following courses. Check with individual schools for their specific requirements.
Other Health Professions ProgramsSome health professions programs such as Nursing, Genetic Counseling, Public Health, and Health Administration often do not have specific prerequisites; however, you should still consult the bulletins for individual graduate programs to determine whether any prerequisites do exist. Other health professions programs such as Athletic Training and Speech Pathology/Audiology often require specialized bachelor's degrees.
