COVER STORY
Dedicated
force
By Calli McCain
Staff WriterDusk on one of the first warm
Saturday evenings of the year finds Brent Watkins,
Albion Public Department of Safety (ADPS) officer,
“bending corners.” He repeatedly circles the blocks
around one of the last liquor stores in town, the
Snack Shop, in order to increase police visibility,
making it look like more patrol cars are on the
road, which can deter criminals.
Bending corners is just one way ADPS
tries to do more with less. As Michigan struggles to
stay afloat in times of economic hardship, budget
cuts to public safety departments across the state
have meant diminishing resources and shrinking
staffs.

Albion-opoly
By Izzi Bendall
Features EditorWhen
Alex Stamm, Grand Blanc sophomore, opened up her email from Residential Life
this past week, she said that she found the choice of wording rather humorous.
“They emailed me saying ‘Congratulations!’” said Stamm, who was placed in
Mitchell Towers for her junior year. “Because of course, I love that I get to
live in a dorm for my third year in a row.”

Some dogs go to Haven

Tucked away off of Blackstone Street, a
little over two miles from the downtown area
and near the interstate, the former Jackson
County Animal Shelter building sits
abandoned. The interior is dark with only
small, translucent windows bordering near
its roof line.
“I never liked the idea of
us hiding the animal shelter operation at
the end of a street, back up against I-94,”
said Randy Treacher, the deputy
administrator for the Jackson shelter.
Treacher proposed the shelter’s move to
Spring Arbor Road before county
commissioners last summer. |

moments
By Danni Wysocki
Sports EditorAfter 135 wins, 24 athletes
receiving league honors, and 16 athletes recognized
as MIAA Player of the Week, many agree that the 2007
to 2008 school year was a successful one in Briton
sports.
“It is a great time to be a Briton,”
said Bobby Lee, Albion College sports information
director.
After polling 100 students, The
Pleiad has determined the top five best sports
moments at Albion, for the 2007 to 2008 school year.

OPINIONS
Your actions speak
louder than words
By Amber Hughston
Guest WriterWe are the idealists, the dreamers,
the educated, underrepresented and ignored. We
represent the majority and the minorities, the
malleable future of our nation—yet we allow
ourselves to be voiceless.
Time and time again, events like the
Ford Institute’s “Rock the Vote” and Awaken’s
“Social Justice Open Mic” go unattended.
