Pamida to Close its Doors

Last month, Pamida announced plans to close its Albion store. According to Kerry Heinrich, company spokesperson, the store’s closure is a result of disappointing sales. The store is set to close in April, though a specific date has not yet been announced.

Open since September 2003, the store occupies the former Kmart building and employs 17 people.

“We are making every effort to transfer those [employees] who are interested to available positions in other Pamida locations,” Heinrich said.

The Omaha, Nebraska, based company operates more than 200 stores, primarily in small communities in the Midwest, selling household products, clothing, and groceries. In 2005, Pamida was bought by Sun Capital Partners, Inc., an investment group specializing in underperforming and turnaround companies.

Though the Albion location is the only store closing in Michigan, 18 other Pamida stores employing 280 people are also set to close also due to low sales. This is the first set of closures for the company since mid-2006.
