Words from the Coach: "We have a very solid team. Our goal is to improve our overall times."- Keith Havens, 21-year head coach.
Outlook:
The Albion swimming and diving teams have begun their season as of Oct. 21.The men have been solid in diving competitions, thanks to a talented group of underclassmen. Ty Lattimore, Grosse Pointe Farms first-year, and Dan Valbracht, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia sophomore, have been phenomenal thus far taking the top spots in many competitions.
Distance freestyle has also been a rewarding event for the Britons. Paul Krone, Cincinnati, Ohio sophomore, continues to look strong and seems poised for a return trip to the National Championships. Krone has won the 500 and 1,000 freestyle events at the Britons last two meets. Chase Bacon, Novelty, Ohio senior, has earned two straight victories in the 50 freestyle. Ryan Gunderson, Grosse Pointe sophomore, has had success in the 50 freestyle as well, challenging Bacon during the Kalamazoo meet and losing by a mere .24 seconds.
"We are strong at diving and the distance freestyle events," Havens said. "We still need to improve our breaststroke and backstroke time."
The women’s team has been very solid in all their events. Rachel Doherty, Beverly Hills senior, continues to impress in the 500 and 1,000 freestyle events, taking first in both of the Briton’s meets thus far. Lindsay Brown, Commerce Township senior, has kept up her all-MIAA form in the three-meter and one-meter diving events. Emily Magyar, Gobles first-year, finished second to Brown in the Britons’ meet against Kalamazoo. Magyar shows promise as a strong compliment to Brown. Elizabeth Colville, DeWitt senior, has been strong in league competition. Unfortunately, Colville will only be available to the Britons for the remainder of the first semester, as she will study abroad in Antarctica next semester.
The Britons look to improve their personal best times. Many swimmers are poised to qualify for nationals, and the team wants to qualify as early as possible. The MIAA continues to provide strong competition. The Britons continue their routine of dual meets, working to improve on personal bests and strengthening the team. The Britons hope to move up from their fifth-place finish of a year ago, but the coaches applaud the teams’ effort in the face of tough league competition.
