Last Thursday, April 19, in front of a packed Towsley Lecture Hall in Norris, Richard Baird, chairman of the board of trustees, announced that the board was honoring Peter and Becky Mitchell for their service to Albion College by changing the name of residential hall Twin Towers to Mitchell Towers.
"It’s cool, the Mitchell Towers thing," Mitchell said in his response at the farewell.
A plaque commemorating the change will be installed somewhere in the building. Beyond that, no changes are being made to the building itself.
The announcement was part of a farewell program for the Mitchells.
Twelve speakers representing the college, the greater Albion community and the Mitchell family reflected on the impact that both Mitchells have had during their decade of service to both Albion College and the greater Albion community.
"Since my presidency has focused on students, naming a residence hall as my legacy is a poignant reminder of my love for students," Mitchell said. "Interestingly, I remember participating in the grand opening ceremony of Twin during my senior year, so the building has special significance to me."
It is not unusual for the college to name
buildings after former presidents of the college. The buildings Vulgamore,
Ferguson and Whitehouse were all named for past presidents.
