Just another lucky guess?

The football team wasn’t the only big winner during Homecoming week. An Albion student also saw victory lane for the third year in a row.
Maria Pintar, Holland junior, claimed her third consecutive Homecoming prize last month when she won a contest sponsored by the Student Senate Student Affairs Committee. Pintar was the closest guesser of how many gumballs were in the jar perched atop the KC front desk. Two years ago, Pintar was the closest to guessing how many M&Ms were in a similar jar. Her prize for both years was a $25 gift certificate to Barnes & Noble bookstore. On top of that, she got to keep the M&Ms.
Some may call it Homecoming luck—Pintar also won a drawing last year for a Homecoming care package filled with Albion gear—but Pintar has a strategy for guessing the correct number of candies in a jar. She multiplies the number of candies in the vertical column by the number in the horizontal row.
“I must have Homecoming luck, because I usually don’t win stuff like this,” Pintar said. “It’s really funny because I’m not that into Homecoming—I only go to like 20 minutes of the football game. So I feel like I don’t really deserve it. But, thanks anyway, Albion.”
So next Homecoming, when you’re thinking your guessing skills might be a little rusty, take some advice from the big winner. Now that the secret’s out, the next candy-counting contest might be the hottest ever.
